Raja Ampat é il luogo che durante la pianificazione del viaggio a Basilea era come un sogno irraggiungibile. Sapevamo sin dall’inizio che era difficile e costoso arrivarci ma leggevamo anche dappertutto che qualsiasi sforzo economico o organizzativo sarebbe stato ripagato dalla bellezza di questo paradiso terrestre.

Questo arcipelago di 1800 isole ad ovest della Nuova Guinea è un’area remota dove non esistono ATM, costruzioni, negozi, ristoranti, acqua corrente e dove l’elettricità viene fornita solamente da generatori a benzina per qualche ora al giorno. Qui la biodiversità marina è la più ricca della terra. Se si cerca su Google, si vedono immagini mozzafiato che insospettiscono un pochino, dato che il colore del mare appare troppo turchese e che le immagini sott’acqua sono troppo chiare. Ma credeteci….é proprio così!

Partiti da Makassar alle 5 di mattina, siamo arrivati dopo due ore di volo a Sorong, cittadina nella Papua da dove partono i traghetti diretti a Waisai, la cittadina più grande dell’arcipelago di Raja Ampat.

Li è venuto a prenderci in barchetta (unico mezzo di trasporto di tutta l’area) Freddy, colui che ci avrebbe ospitato e con cui avremmo fatto anche un tour in barca di sei giorni. Freddy vive in una palafitta/bungalow con la sua famiglia a Mansuar, su una spiaggia splendida con acque cristalline, dove abbiamo passato anche noi la notte prima del tour in barca e le tre successive.

Muniti di tende, mangiare, benzina e acqua ci siamo avventurati per le isole dell’arcipelago che abbiamo esplorate per sei giorni e cinque notti.

Non voglio stare a lungo a raccontarvi quali cose splendide abbiamo visto e vissuto in questo paradiso dato che è molto difficile descrivere tale bellezza. Nuotare nelle acque limpide con le migliaia di varietà di pesci e la visibilità marina che arriva anche a 15-20 metri è stata la nostra attività principale per la durata del tour. Le tantissime isole idilliche e sperdute con sabbia bianchissima e una natura esplosiva sono state la nostra casa, regalandoci spettacoli come il phytoplancton notturno e squaletti che giravano vicino alla riva mentre noi giocavamo a frisbee.

Nonostante generalmente venissimo guardati con curiosità e sospetto allo stesso tempo, in alcuni villaggi giocare con i bimbi ci ha lasciato un segno indelebile nel cuore.

È troppo difficile descrivere ciò che abbiamo visto e vissuto, ma le immagini ve ne daranno un assaggio.

Raja Ampat is the place that during the planning of the trip was like an unreachable dream. We knew from the beginning that it was difficult and costly to get there but we also read everywhere that any economic or organizational effort would have been paid off by the beauty of this earthly paradise.

This archipelago of 1800 islands in the west of New Guinea is a remote are where you will not find ATM’s, buildings, shops, restaurants, running water and where electricity is only provided by generators a few hours a day. Here marine biodiversity is the richest in the world. If you search on Google, you will see breath-taking images that will make you sceptic, as the colour of the sea looks too turquoise and the underwater images are too clear. But believe me…it’s just like that!

Departing from Makassar at 5am, we arrived after two hours flight in Sorong, a small town in Papua where ferries depart to Waisai, the largest town in the Raja Ampat archipelago.

Freddy, the guy who hosted us, and with whom we also have a six-day boat tour, came to pick us up in Waisai with his small boat (the only means of transportation in the whole area). Freddy lives in a stilt house/bungalow with his family in Mansuar, on a gorgeous beach with crystal clear waters, where we also spent the night before the boat tour and the following three.

Equipped with tents, food, gasoline and water, we ventured out to the islands of the archipelago, exploring them for six days and five nights.

I do not want to be long in telling you what wonderful things we have seen and experienced in this paradise, since it is very difficult to describe such beauty. Swimming in the clear waters with thousands of fish species and the sea visibility that even reaches 15-20 meters has been our main activity for the duration of the tour. The many idyllic islands with white sand beaches and an explosive nature have been our home, providing us with amazing natural shows like the phytoplankton at night and little sharks swimming near the shore while we were playing frisbee.

Despite being generally looked at with curiosity and suspicion at the same time, in some villages playing with the kids left us an indelible sign in our hearts.

It is too difficult to describe what we have seen and experienced, but the images will give it a taste.
